The 3rd graders had a wonderful time visiting Volkening Farm. We experienced what life was like in the Midwest in the 1800s. Students visited the blacksmith, fed the chickens, baked pretzels, milked a cow, and played old fashioned games in the yard. We learned that children back then had many daily chores on the family farm. What a great way to culminate our study of the Midwest!

We had such fun celebrating Buffalo Grove High School seniors who were once Greenbrier Gators. On Wednesday afternoon, we lined the hallways to high five and cheer for them as they walked by. One special senior stopped by to visit us afterwards. The 3rd graders discovered what it would be like to work at a candy making factory on Thursday when they participated in a Hershey Kiss Assembly Line simulation. Students had specific jobs on the assembly line and a challenge to create as many "quality" Hershey kisses in the time allowed. We had a great discussion afterwards about the pros and cons of working in a factory. This week we learned about the history of the Midwest. Students worked in cooperative groups to create a poster and present the important information to the class. To apply our knowledge of graphing, the students enjoyed creating a survey, polling their fellow classmates, creating graphs, and writing a summary of the results. We had an awesome time exploring some cool Makers Space activities in the LMC. We tried out the Lego wall, Osmos, Ozobots, and Spheros. To culminate our novel study of Ramona Quimby, Age 8, the class performed skits of their favorite scenes from the book. They had fun planning, writing scripts, making props, and performing. I think some of us are destined for the stage. The class had fun playing a pattern-matching game where they discovered that some fruits are related to each other. Our third grade scientists studied the traits of radishes, cucumbers, celery, potatoes, and tomatoes in science. According to scientists, a fruit has seeds. |
