This week we had fun sharing our immigrant interviews and learning about each other's heritage. We began designing our class quilt to represent the many cultures present in our school family.

Chapter two in math focuses on mental addition and subtraction. The class had fun playing "Add Mentally" and "Subtract Mentally" in small groups to exercise our brains in mental math. Our "expert" groups did an awesome job presenting the important facts about their topic of Chicago's early development. We learned that Chicago grew because of ships, trains, factories, stockyards, immigrants, and railroads. You're never too young to build words with magnetic letters. We had fun building and writing some frequently misspelled words during word work on Tuesday. The class was divided into six "expert" groups to jigsaw the reading and take notes on Chicago's development. The class had fun playing consonant cluster Go Fish during word work time on Monday. This week in social studies we learned all about Jean Baptiste Pointe DuSable and the trading post he started at Fort Dearborn. We had fun reenacting our very own trading post "Fort Duffer." Students created goods and had fun trading and bartering at the post. This week during math we played a fun game called "Guess My Number." Students practiced making numbers in the thousands and their opponent had to try and guess it. We used place value language as well as the terms greater than and less than to give meaningful clues. During word work this week we studied beginning and ending consonant clusters. This helps us become better readers and writers. |
