The third graders wrapped up Ramona Quimby, Age 8 by planning and performing skits of their favorite scenes. Much fun was had by all!

This week in math we've been learning about data and graphing. We've studied bar graphs, pictographs, and line plots. We had fun developing our own surveys and polling our classmates. We can't wait to use our data to create graphs! Thanks, Officer O. for visiting our classroom and teaching us about stranger danger, internet safety, and cyber bullying. We appreciate all your awesome tips. Thank you for serving the city of Arlington Heights. We appreciate all you do to keep us safe. The third graders had an awesome week planning, designing, and building Rube Goldberg machines in science. Our challenge was to make a contraption that could wake you up in the morning. The machines had to use at least four forces that we've learned about in science. Can you spot any examples of pushes, pulls, magnetism, friction, gravity, or inertia? Many thanks to all our volunteers for planning and chaperoning a wonderful Valentine's Day celebration. We appreciate all your time and efforts. Much fun was had by all! :) It was so interesting working with magnets this week in Room 236. We learned that magnets all have a north and south pole. Magnets can attract and repel. We were very curious about what materials magnets can work through. We were surprised by some of our findings. This week we had fun learning all about friction! The third graders conducted friction tests to see how we could go faster down a slide. We made mini sliders and attached different materials such as: sandpaper, rubber, foam, aluminum foil, cardboard, pennies. balloons. It was neat to see which sliders had the greatest and least amount of friction. The third graders learned about all different kinds of bridges: arch, truss, suspension, beam, etc. Then, they were challenged to build a bridge using only two sheets of paper. We tested the bridges by placing pennies on them. One team's bridge could hold 110 pennies! The intermediate grades participated in STEAM activities on Friday afternoon. Our challenge was to design and build a land yacht that could carry a little gator across the commons floor. We could only blow on it to move it. These third grade engineers planned out their yachts and used makers space materials to build them. They tested them and made improvements before the big showdown in the commons at the end of the day. Bravo to all our engineers for giving it your best shot! :) This week in science we kicked off our "Forces in Motion" unit. We participated in a Mystery Science activity that had us create a "hopper popper." Our goal was to get it to jump as high as we could. Can you tell what forces are at work? |
