The third grade engineers were charged with the task of designing a "candy grabber" this morning. Our teams of three worked diligently to create a prototype, test it, and revise it. It was lots of fun! The entire school met in the commons to skype with the author of Wishtree, Katherine Applegate. Two of our classmates were able to ask her a question. They asked, "What inspired you to write Wishtree?" She answered that the last presidential election caused her to write this. She didn't like how people were treating each other and wanted to write a book about kindness. It was really fun...and we learned a lot about her. What a neat lady! What a wonderful day we had on Friday celebrating reading. Much fun was had by all! During reading we've been studying nonfiction text features. Today, we worked with our turn and talk partner to find examples of these features in nonfiction books. The class enjoyed playing a game called "Lotto" to practice ending consonant clusters during word work this week. The first experiment in our weather unit was to study how clouds form. Who knew that we could make a cloud in our classroom? Tuesday in the LMC, the students explored the theme of "friendship" in the book Wishtree. In cooperative groups students were charged with the task of designing an "ideal friend". The teams brainstormed characteristics of a good friend and used maker space materials to create symbols of these qualities. On Tuesday, the class had fun playing a game of Jeopardy to review for the Chicago test. They did a great job working in teams to answer the questions. What a gorgeous day for our Chicago field trip! We had an amazing time on our sightseeing tour. It was so cool to spot the landmarks we researched along the way. Many thanks to our wonderful parent chaperones who helped make the day a success. |
