On Friday, our class participated in our first "breakout" all about weather. We worked cooperatively to solve puzzles and use clues to unlock all the locks. Phew! We broke out with time to spare! During reader's workshop we've learned that authors use different structures to write books. They are: problem/solution, chronological, compare/contrast, descriptive, and cause/effect. We had fun working in teams to read short stories and determine what text structure the author used. Students are working in expert groups to research severe weather. They are using articles, websites, videos, and online sources to gather information and take notes on blizzards, hurricanes, tornadoes, thunderstorms, and droughts. In this Mystery, students explored the effects of natural hazards, such as tornadoes, hurricanes, and dust storms. In the activity, Design a Windproof House, students built paper house models. Then, using limited materials, students designed multiple solutions that will make their houses sturdy enough to survive a wind storm. It was a spooktacular Halloween in Room 236! Many thanks to our wonderful room moms and all our volunteers for making the afternoon so special. We appreciate you! :) We worked in teams to build paper skeletons. Great teamwork third graders! I'm so proud of these kiddos for publishing their very first books as third graders. We learned lots about the writing process and celebrated our hard work at the end of the week. Students had an opportunity to sit in the author's chair and read the book aloud to the class. The class enjoyed playing a math game called "Race to Zero" to practice our subtraction with regrouping skills. Wow! Look at the beautiful paper quilt we made together! We come from many cultures to make a wonderful class. :) |
